Handle These Clean-Up Projects Before Fall

With the busy fall season just around the corner, your household is probably abuzz with kids going back to school, and planning for fall foliage getaways. Before you head full thrust into autumn take some time to handle a few of these post-summer clean-up projects recommended by Better Homes & Gardens. You'll thank yourself when the holiday season rolls around!

Clear out last year's school stuff.

Whether it's last season's uniforms, school books, craft supplies or outgrown clothes, take some time to get rid of clothing and school-related items your kids no longer need. Be sure to get rid of all pens and markers that have run dry as well as torn or stained lunch boxes. This will open up space for the barrage of necessities that will accompany the new school year.

Organize the kitchen.

Between eating out, grilling and quick picnics, your culinary pursuits probably languished over the summer. As the cool weather slowly returns, take some time to inventory your pantry closet and freezer, getting rid of anything that's expired or suffering from freezer burn. This will help you start stocking up on supplies for cozy fall casseroles and baked goods.

Clean up the backyard.

Be sure to prep your yard for fall and winter by raking up leaves and debris, cutting back perennials and pulling up annuals that are done for the season. Also be sure to store or cover your backyard furniture and return any garden tools to the garage or shed. Taking care of these tasks now will help your yard and garden weather the winter and burst back to life come next spring.

Tackle the mudroom.

After a busy summer, your mudroom or entryway may need an overhaul, so be sure to clean out beach paraphernalia, straw hats and bottles of sunscreen and bug repellant. Pack these items away for next year, and do a deep clean to get rid of any traces of sand and dirt.

Refresh closets.

The end of summer is also an excellent time to clean out your closets. Get rid of shoes or clothing that suffered too much wear and tear over the summer, or anything that no longer fits properly. Store bathing gear in an out-of-the way place, and make room for fall sweaters and jackets.

Taking the time to handle these projects now will give your home a fresh start for fall, so that you can enjoy all the moments of the season unencumbered.
